Three teams from the Â鶹´«Ã½ Automotive Technology program from the Northport Campus earned the top three spots in this year’s Greater New York Auto Dealers Association (GNYADA) competition, besting more than 25 other teams throughout the state.

Held virtually this year, the competition is a test of skill and knowledge, with a time component that awards scholarships and other prizes to top finishers. In the state-wide contest, secondary students were challenged to complete a 50-question Automotive Service Excellence IASE) test; correctly identify tools; work on an HVAC challenge; diagnose running problems and replace parts using the Virtual Car Diagnostic Simulator; and write a repair order listing the issues and the related repairs.

Assisting the students in their successful preparation for the contest were Automotive Technology instructors Ralph Savarese and Michael Angelino.

The winning teams are as follows:                                                                                                                             

First Place Team: Hunter Johanson of Smithtown and Ryan Proce of South Huntington, who each were awarded:               

• $2,000 Scholarship from GNYADA
• 100% Tuition Scholarship from Automotive Training Center
• $7,500 Scholarship from Lincoln Technical Institute
• $10,000 Scholarship from Ohio Technical College
• $15,000 Scholarship from Universal Technical Institute

Second Place Team: Jake Mayer of Commack and Manahil Ejaz of South Huntington, who each were awarded:

• $1,000 Scholarship from GNYADA
• 100% Tuition Scholarship from Automotive Training Center
• $5,000 Scholarship from Lincoln Technical Institute
• $7,500 Scholarship from Ohio Technical College
•  $10,000 Scholarship from Universal Technical Institute

Third Place Team: Christian Colavito of Commack and Dylan Walsh of Elwood, who each were awarded:

• $500 Scholarship from GNYADA
• 50% Tuition Scholarship from Automotive Training Center
• $2,500 Scholarship from Lincoln Technical Institute
• $5,000 Scholarship from Ohio Technical College
• $5,000 Scholarship from Universal Technical Institute

Although they did not place, Andrew Sangiovanni of Harborfields and Liam Wine of Northport each received a $1,500 Scholarship from Lincoln Technical Institute and a $1,000 Scholarship from Ohio Technical College.

James Hauth was recognized by the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association with a $5000 scholarship to a school of his choice for his outstanding achievements in Â鶹´«Ã½’s Automotive Technology program. To celebrate the GNYADA’s 10 year anniversary, the Association sponsored a scholarship competition and asked automotive instructors to submit entries of their outstanding students. Tech instructors and students attended the celebratory luncheon when James was awarded the scholarship for further automotive training.

Joseph Zambrotta and Grant Howard, who will be 2014 graduates of Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s automotive technology program, so impressed Steve Hurd (r.), service and parts director at Acura of Huntington during their internship last summer that the dealership offered them two days of paid work-study this school year.

Â鶹´«Ã½ offers the AYES program to encourage automotive students to apply the skills they have learned in their Tech classroom in the workplace. According to Hurd, the Acura dealership was eager to sponsor Tech students in hopes of finding responsible and knowledgeable new technicians that they could then hire.

Â鶹´«Ã½ is currently developing programs with other Long Island Acura dealerships for future internship and work-study opportunities for Tech students. The students, as well as three other Tech teams, had 1½ hours to troubleshoot and then repair problems that could have been anything from inadequate tire pressure to an electrical malfunction on several new model automobiles. The winning team will continue practicing their troubleshooting skills with their Tech teachers at a local dealership in preparation for the New York State competition that will be held at the GNYADA Training Center in Whitestone on Feb. 11. To determine which car will be used at this contest, Ralph Savarese, the Tech teacher of the winning students, drew an envelope out of a hat. The students now have a month to prepare for de-bugging a 2014 Toyota Corolla and another opportunity to win more scholarships and equipment.

This year GNYADA had a side competition for the alternates that each team sends. Tech’s alternate from the school’s Northport campus, Jonathan Santana from Kings Park, won a $25 gift card to Foot Locker and a $2,500 scholarship.

Â鶹´«Ã½ is the career and technical education division of Western Suffolk BOCES. High school students can register now for fall classes in 30 programs.
